Reno Jazz Orchestra has performed on the festival since its inception in 2004. We welcome them back with their high energy and highly refined playing. Join us on Sun., Aug. 25, 2019, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Capital Amphitheater, in the beautiful park between the Capitol Building and the Legislative Building in Carson City.  The band will be joined on this outing by vocalist Kyle Rae.

A Reno-native and University of Nevada alumnus, Kyle Rea is a singer, pianist, and bandleader who is a rising star on Reno’s jazz stage. Playing to packed audiences with his own 25-piece orchestra, Rea is a powerful and soulful tenor with a broad stylistic range and an ear for improvisation. Rea studied opera, jazz and piano at the University of Nevada where he earned his music degree. Since forming the Kyle Rea Orchestra, he has been headlining concerts and shows from Artown to VIP parties. In 2018, Rea released his latest album, Live at Sticks Center, now streaming.  See Kyle’s website at https://www.kylerea.com.

Seating is limited.  Audience is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

Oh, that jazz big band sound! The Reno Jazz Orchestra, currently lead by Chuck Reider,  is motivated by the desire to create good music in the grand tradition of the jazz big band stage performance. It’s based on the love of that grand sound and the rush and wonder of playing 17 pieces to a packed house. Now, that’s heaven! Reno has made a name for itself with jazz, and some would argue, the strongest tradition is the big band sound. The intense love of music has made Reno a magnet for world-class performers. Whatever venue, historic or modern, the demand for big band jazz continues, and RJO loves playing for audiences and loves its fans.

A highlight of Carson City’s August music festival is the Reno Jazz Orchestra, presenting big-band jazz at its finest. Formed in 1997, RJO is a diversified big band whose members have performed with Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Elvis Presley, Natalie Cole, and Luciano Pavarotti. Members traveled with Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Ray Charles, Buddy Rich, and Buddy Morrow. RJO has recorded several CDs. Information about the RJO can be found at www.renojazzorchestra.org.  The event is free.
